A Comment on Slavery Let me state unequivocally that the practice of slavery and the owning of human beings by other human beings is an abhorrent practice. Nevertheless, it was an accepted practice in many cultures over history. It is my strong belief that, as genealogists, we need to look at old records as they existed when made; and should abstract those records faithfully, even if some of the terms used therein may be offensive to some by today’s standards. Simply stated, “It was what is was.” Only by reviewing the unvarnished, non sugar coated, ugly truth can we really appreciate the faults of the past. Please be assured that it is not our intent to offend anyone who may visit this site. |
