LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA

Green FAMILY

County Intro

Lunenburg County was formed in 1745 when it was split off from Brunswick County. When researching prior to 1745, it is obvious that Brunswick County records should be searched.

What is not obvious is that parts of Surry County and Isle of Wight County were added to Brunswick in 1723 and 1732. Accordingly, those counties should be researched when researching Lunenburg families prior of 1732.

Lunenburg was split into several other counties. Halifax County was split off in 1752. Pittsylvania, Henry and Patrick counties were subsequently split off of Halifax County. Bedford was split off of Lunenburg County in 1754. Campbell and Franklin counties were subsequently split off of Bedford County. Charlotte County and Mecklenburg County were split off of Lunenburg County in 1765.

Parish Intro

Lunenburg was originally comprised of Cumberland Parish. Antrim Parish was split off in 1752 and became the original Parish of Halifax County. Cornwall Parish was split off in 1757 and later became the original Parish of Halifax County. St. James Parish was split off in 1761 and later became the original Parish of Mecklenburg County.
