Research Observations: Estimating birth dates (or a range of dates) of males prior to census records, and in absence of marriage records is generally impossible in the colonial era. It is just a good guess or, unfortunately, often a bad guess. The good news is when you can find a church parish record, a military affidavit, bible record or other rare document.

1. Three children of Henry I have birth records in Bristol Parish. That is wonderful to have proven dates. However, this string of tithable lists in Lunenburg County has been ignored by most genealogists for far too long. These lists record show that Stephen was born 1740-1741; Frederick was born about 1743; and Richard was born about 1746. These dates should be used until someone else comes up with a better source.

2. There is a nine to ten year gap between the birth of Winifred Green and Elizabeth’s son Stephen. This is highly suggestive that the mother of Winifred died after she was born; and Henry I later married a younger Elizabeth Griffin. Hence Henry I had at least two wives.

3. Elizabeth Sizemore last reported tithables in 1761.
