Gen 104 - Family Search - Getting Started

Hint: Family Search has many different ways to skin a cat. The following is but one way to use it. Play with it an see how you want to use it. The following instructions are fairly basic. The Family Search help screen is very helpful should you need further instructions.

Part One - Sign Up

Before I get into the main discussion, this article assumes that you have used www.familysearch.org. If you have not used it, you are missing a fantastic tool. FamilySearch is sponsored by the LDS (Mormon Church). You do not have to be a Mormon to use it; and the LDS church will not seek you out for conversion. You have to register to use the program, but it is free.

Before you start...

... Click on your name in the upper right of your screen and make sure your contact information is entered and accurate.

Hint: Log In. If you are at home or on your personal laptop, check the button to stay logged in for 2 weeks. This will save you a lot of time in the long run. Do not use this option if you are on a public computer. During the two weeks period you can log back in without entering your username or password.

Part Two - Research Wiki

One way of finding out information on a wide variety of genealogy topics is to use the Research Wiki. It contains a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics. First, login to Family Search (www.familysearch.org.) Click on Search on the Menu Bar, followed by Research Wiki. This will bring you to a page where you can search the wiki.
