Introduction Understanding this line requires a lot of circumstantial evidence, spanning almost a century! The pieces fit well together and collectively make a strong case for the conclusions herein. The following Partial Descendant Chart shows the key descendants for understanding one line. Partial Descendant Chart Robert King m. Mary (West?) Robert King m. Mary Cason (After Robert Died, She Married William Collins) Harmon or Herman King James King m. Susannah Chick Mary West King James King m. Mary Brown John B. King Cason King Robert King m. ? Robert King As of this writing, all we know about the elder Robert King is that he was an adult by 1721, living in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, had a wife named Mary, a son named Robert who was a adult by 1740 and a son named Joseph who was a adult by 1747. The senior Robert King moved to adjacent Orange County, Virginia ca 1743. At that time Orange County was a frontier county, extending westward all the way into present day West Virginia! As of this time I have not tried to track him after he left Spotsylvania County. More research is needed. Just to keep us on our toes, there is another Robert King that was in Orange County at the time. In Orange County Order Book 22, page 56 (1740), Robert King imported himself Cathren, John , Sarah and Elizabeth King from Ireland to Philadelphia and thence to Virginia. I will refer to him as Robert King from Ireland. In 1745, Robert King was granted 91 acres west of the Blue Ridge (Mountains). He moved on out to the frontier Augusta County where he died in 1749, leaving a will naming wife Catherine, and children John, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine. There is one hint as to Mary’s maiden name. Robert and Mary (________) King’s son Robert married MaryCason in 1741. The junior Robert King had a son named James King, whose first born daughter was named Mary West King. We know the junior Robert was married to MaryCason. Thus, it is possible that West may be the maiden name of Mary, wife of Robert, Sr. This is just a hunch at this time. The junior Robert King died in 1757. Subsequent deeds show his widow Mary (Cason) King married a second time to William Collins. Robert and Mary (Cason) King ’s son James King married Susannah Chick, daughter of William Chick and Susannah (_________). James King died a very young adult leaving two young daughters. His wife Susannah (Chick) King was pregnant with their third child at the time he made his will. Estate and deed records show that their later born son was James King. There is no later mention of Susannah (Chick) King, the widow of James. It is likely she died as well. This left the junior James King to be raised by his grandparents Mary (Cason) King (now Mary Collins) and William Chick and his wife Susannah (________) Chick. Here is the clue that ties all this together. The junior James King named a son Cason King, obviously being named for the junior James King’s grandmother MaryCason. To confuse matters further, Cason King moved on to Madison County, Georgia, where the name was passed down to subsequent generations as Carson King. In his marriage record he appears asCason; in the 1826 Tax Digest of Pittsylvania County he appears as Carson; and in his father’s will he appears as Chasin King. There is another name to consider. The younger Robert King also had a son named Harmon/herman King. This is also the name of a son of Martin King, Jr. of Goochland County who later settled in Bedford County. This is highly suggestive of a common ancestor. Both Robert King, Sr. and Martin King, Sr. appear to have come from the area of King William, King and Queen, Essex and New Kent County. Caroline County was formed from some of the earlier counties. More research is needed, but will be most difficult. Unfortunately, of these five counties, four have suffered significant loss of records with the only exception being Essex County. |

Note: The above date is from a subsequent deed, dated 7 Aug 1739, abstracted below. Note: At that time the land was either in King and Queen County or King William County. This land was one (or a portion) of three tracts (2143, 400 and 400 acres) that had been granted to Larkin Chew on 26 Apr 1712. (See Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Volume III, 1695-1732, page 125.) The county on the two 400 acre tracts was left blank in the grant. They may simply have not known at the time, due to the courses of the River or the creation of Spotsylvania County. The Mattaponi R. was the dividing line between King and Queen County and King William County. However, once you got to the frontier it split into the Matta, Po and Ni Rivers. The county line could have been determined using any one of these three branches of the River! This was solved in 1721 with the formation of Spotsylvania County spanning all three branches. The River Po is just northwest of the Caroline County line, which was formed in 1727. See Virginia State Library, Parish Lines of Diocese of Virginia. See Spotsylvania County, Virginia Deed Book C. See William Armstrong Crozier, Virginia County Records, Spotsylvania County 1721-1800, page 148. Note: This land was patented to Larkin Chew . It has been platted in the Deed Mapper Data Pool. It is located in the center of present day Madison County, VA. |
