TRACT ONE Tract One is one the ss the Po R. in present day. The grant was for 400 acres. The amount of acres sold to Robert King in 1721 is unknown. Robert King, in 1723 and 1725, sold 200 acres from this tract. He was referred to as an Adj. owner as late as 1729. (It is often common that someone might be referred to as an Adj. owner for a few years after they have moved on.) Robert King is referred to as a prior owner in yet a few more deeds from 1727 through 1729. This tract has been in Spotsylvania Co. since it was formed in 1721. It may be the same Robert King that later owned Tract Two, but this cannot be proved at this time. |

Note: The above date is from a subsequent deed, dated 7 Aug 1739, abstracted below. Note: At that time the land was either in King and Queen County or King William County. This land was one of two 400 acre tracts that had been granted to Larkin Chew on 26 Apr 1712. (See Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Volume III, 1695-1732, page 125.) The county on the two 400 acre tracts was left blank in the grant. They may simply have not known at the time, due to the courses of the River or the creation of Spotsylvania County. The Mattaponi R. was the dividing line between King and Queen County and King William County. However, once you got to the frontier it split into the Matta, Po and Ni Rivers. The county line could have been determined using any one of these three branches of the River! This was solved in 1721 with the formation of Spotsylvania County spanning all three branches. TRACT TWO Tract Two was definitely owned by a Robert King whose wife name was Mary. He had a son named Joseph, but there is nor records of him having a son named Robert. He acquired this land in 1731 and gifted the last portion to his son in 1770. This tract is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the northwest side of present day Madison County, VA, near the county line with Page County. This tract was originally in Spotsylvania County, when it was granted. Then it became a part of Orange County when it was formed in 1734. Then it became a part of Culpeper County when it was formed in 1749. Lastly, it became a part of Madison County when it was formed about 1792-1793. |
