This is an analysis that led to the solution of the yDNA of many of the members of the FTDNA Cyan Group yDNA. Many years ago I had identified the wrong James as the son of William “T” Vaughan of Mecklenburg Co. Along comes genealogy DNA and some data simply did not make sense. Then Chuck Vaughan pointed out to me that the two James Vaughan s were switched. After correcting the James that was the son of William “T” Vaughan, the Cyan Group yDNA results made sense. This analysis is based upon the ownership of the two slaves Jacob and Joe. The rest of the rows are included for completeness and can be ignored for this analysis. The letters and numbers in the first line of each box are the district Ids and the page the tax entry is found on. The numbers below the names are White Polls, Black Polls, then cattle, horses, etc. These are included for a year to year consistency check and can be ignored for this analysis. ANALYSIS In the years 1782-1785 Jacob was owned by William “T” Vaughan. Then William “T’ Vaughan, in his will, gave his slave Jacob to his son James Vaughan. James son of William “T” paid taxes on Jacob in 1786 and 1787 and then moves to Halifax Co., VA. This proves conclusively that this James Vaughan is the son of William “T” Vaughan. Slave Joe was owned by James Vaughan, son of Joshua Vaughan. James paid taxes on Joe from 1782 to 1788 and then moved to Laurens District, SC. A few years later he moved to Oglethorpe Co., GA where he died. Slave Joe was still in his estate when he died. This proves conclusively that this James Vaughan is NOT the son of William “T” Vaughan. Other evidence strongly suggests that he was the son of Joshua Vaughan. |
