MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA

GREGORY FAMILY

Observations

Before 1765

Recently, I dug into the Colonial Tithables Lists for Lunenburg County 1753 - 1759, 1761 - 1762. These lists include present day counties Charlotte and Mecklenburg. My primary purpose was to look up surnames associated with William Vaughan and his wife Mildridge, especially Gregory.

The result was a bit of a shocker. There were just a scattered few Gregory in Lunenburg a few years prior to Mecklenburg being formed.

Moses Gregory 1753-1755

John Gregory 1756, 1759

Isaac Gregory 1759, 1762, 1764 (In 1762 and 1764, he was in SW Mecklenburg County)

Joseph Gregory 1762 (Just N of William Vaughan across the Dan R.)

William Gregory 1762 (N of William Vaughan across the Dan R. He died leaving a widow and a very small family of no apparent relationship to Mildridge Gregory.)

Andrew Gregory, minor Paid by John Smith (SW Mecklenburg County)

James Gregory, minor Paid by John Smith (SW Mecklenburg County)

Lener Gregory, widow of William Gregory

William Gregory, minor Paid by his mother Lener Gregory

The only two that stand out are:

Isaac who lived very close to William Vaughan in 1762 and 1764; and

Joseph (b. < 1741, who bears the given name of one of the two known sons of Mildridge (_____) Gregory Vaughan

1765 - 1781

During this Period, There Are No Tithables Lists or Tax Lists for Mecklenburg Co.

Isaac Gregory also sold 50 acres on Eastling Cr. in 1765.
