MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA GREEN FAMILY Comments on the Lands of Henry Green I |
||
On 28 December 1728, Henry Green I received a 200 acre patent of land on the north side of the Nottoway River, then in the far frontiers of Prince George County, Virginia. [Virginia Patent Book 14.015, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLZ-1S45-4?i=34&cat=584564.] In 1752, after he had moved to Lunenburg County and died, this land was cut into present day Dinwiddie County. [Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines of Southern Virginia, p. 75. This 200 acre tract is highly likely where he lived when the births of three of his children were recorded in the Bristol Parish Registry. Brunswick County was formed in 1720 (but not effective until 1832), just across the river from him. [Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines of Southern Virginia, p. 72. Then in 1746, Lunenburg County was formed from the western frontier of Brunswick County. [Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines of Southern Virginia, p. 72. In 1752, Halifax County was formed from the western frontier of Lunenburg County. [Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines of Southern Virginia, p. 76. The area that became Charlotte County was left behind in Lunenburg County. Most importantly for Green family researchers, the area that became Mecklenburg County was also left behind. In 1765, Mecklenburg County was formed from the southern section of Lunenburg County. [Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines of Southern Virginia, p. 77. That is where his two Lunenburg patents were located and where the unpublished Lunenburg County Tithables Lists series for 1753-1762 prove the estimated birth dates of Henry Green I’s three youngest sons. |

But wait, there is another early land patent to another Henry Green! On 20 Sep 1745, this other Henry Green received a 300 acre patent of land on the north side of the Hurricane Swamp, then in Amelia County, Virginia. [Virginia Patent Book 22.574, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C37S-3364-B?i=590&cat=584564.] This tract is close to the mouth of Hurricane Swamp on the very south end of present day Nottoway County. It is currently part of part of Fort Pickens Military Reservation. This Henry Green is likely a nephew, as Henry Green I and his son Henry Green II had already moved a good distance to Buffalo Cr. Also, from Amelia County Deed Records, this new Henry Green was alive after Henry Green I had died. |

In 1748, Henry Green I received two patents of land (Virginia Patent Book 26.635 for 381acres, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C37Q-GS5L-H?i=645&cat=584564; and Virginia Patent Book 26.637 for 404 acres, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C37Q-GSTK-L?i=647&cat=584564) in Lunenburg County, Virginia (present day Mecklenburg County, Virginia). These patents totaled up to 785 acres when granted. They were obviously surveyed upon his death and the acreage recalculated to 760 acres. Each heir received 152 acres. 1. The timing of these deeds suggests that the Elizabeth, the widow of Henry I Sizemore died (or remarried) between 1761 when she last returned a tithables tax in Lunenburg County and the date of these deeds in 1767. 2. Henry Green I died in 1748 Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Book 1.477, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4L-8KTF?i=253&cat=372284 . 3. Henry Green II, the son of Henry Green I made his LWT on 23 Jan 1761 and died before 5 May 1761 with a LWT naming heirs of unspecified relationships. Lunenburg County, Virginia Will Book 02.008., https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4L-8KTF?i=253&cat=372284 . However, a son Henry Green III was born later in 1761, after his father had made his LWT. This “upset the apple cart”. Henry Green III later received his father’s share by deed in 1777, after a formal guardian for him was named. |
