Gregory Family
Mildridge [Unknown]
m. 1. [Unknown] Gregory
m. 2. William “T” Vaughan
There is quite a bit of confusion that surrounds these families. I have previously restarted from scratch and tried to piece together as much as I could on the Vaughan side. Now it is time to do the same for the Gregory side.
Here is what we know for sure.
• Mildridge Gregory m. a second time to William “T” Vaughan at some time before 1778 as evidenced by two deeds by the couple. DB 05.203 and DB 05.211 in Mecklenburg Co., VA
• Mildridge had two sons named Ambrose and Joseph as evidence by her LWT. She also had 4 more children, not specifically named in her LWT.
• William’s daughter Nancy “Ann” m. Richard W. Gregory. Many once thought they were relatively close in age. Nothing could be further from the truth. ...
• We know from land patents, deeds and tax records that William “T” Vaughan moved to frontier Lunenburg Co. in the late 1740s. He lived in the portion that became Mecklenburg Co. when it was formed in 1764.
Now let’s review when the Gregory family came onto the scene.
• Richard W. arrived by 1764 in Halifax Co.
• Ambrose Gregory arrived by 1770 in Halifax Co. Ambrose m. his stepsister Sarah Vaughan, the daughter of William “T” Vaughan. He moved to Mecklenburg Co. near his mother, by the late 1780s. Ambrose remained in Mecklenburg Co. and d. there in 1830, shortly after his wife Sarah had died. Quite shockingly, Ambrose claimed to be from age 90 to 100 in the 1830 census!
• Joseph Gregory was in Lunenburg Co. by 1773 as evidenced by the Lunenburg Tithables list.; and by 1782 had settled in Mecklenburg Co., near his mother. He had a son Joseph Gregory Jr. who appears to have been b. about 1771. Joseph Jr moved to nearby Charlotte Co. in 1805; and Joseph Sr. moved to Charlotte Co. in 1807. The dates of residence between the two counties dovetails perfectly. Joseph Gregory, Jr. d. in Feb 1816 in Charlotte Co., leaving a substantial estate which was divided among his widow Peggy and his ten children.
• Joseph Sr had a few more surprises in store for modern genealogists that love to research. By 1826, he left Charlotte Co. At first he seemed to just disappear. Luckily, it soon became clear he had moved to nearby Lunenburg Co. In the 1830 census of Lunenburg Co., he stated he was 80 to 90 years old! He moved with his family to Davidson, TN. His Find a Grave Memorial states he was b. 1 Apr 1741; and died 2 Apr 1742.
Here are a few more circumstantial clues:
• Ambrose named a daughter Mildred.
• Joseph Gregory Sr named a dau. Mildrid
• Joseph Gregory Jr named a son Ambrose.
