Roger Gregory and Fanny Loury, widow m. ca Aug 1776 in Lunenburg, Virginia. As a part of a marriage contract (entered into on 29 Mar 1776 before they married; and recorded on 8 Aug 1776 after they married), they set up a trust for the family including Roger, Fanny and their then unborn children. By 1782, the couple was living in Mecklenburg, Virginia. The parties to the trust are detailed in a series of Personal Tax Digests starting in 1782. From these tax digest coupled with a few deeds, we learn quite a bit about their family.

Son Roger was age 16 by 1794; and 21 by 1799. Hence he was b. in about 1778. [This is problematic as Roger was supposedly from Rogers, Sr’s. first marriage.]

Son Herbert was age 16 by 1795; and paid personal taxes in his own right by 1796. Hence he was b. in about 1779. He moved to Dinwiddie Co. in 1805-1806. He died there in 1821. His LWT was not found there. Fortunately it was found recorded in Will Book 10.090 in Mecklenburg, Virginia.

Son Francis appears to be age 21 by 1806. Hence he was b. in about 1785.

Proof of two daus. of Roger Gregory is found in the following two deeds:

Deed 1: 18 Jan 1793. Thomas Loury, of Lunenburg Co. sold to Fanny Gregory and Patsey Gregory, daus. of Roger Gregory, Sr., of Mecklenburg Co. 1137 acres for £300. Land in Lunenburg Co. Adj. Roland Ward, John Lowry, dec’d., Joshua? Ragsdale, dec’d., Daniel Mason, James Gee, Robert Estes. Witnessed: Duncan Mcaslan, John Johnson, Francis Ballard, Obediah Cheatham. Recorded 11 Dec 1794 and 8 Oct 1795. Lunenburg, VA Deed Book 17.128.

Deed 2: 15 Nov 1809. Fanny Gregory sold to Martha Stokes, being a distributee of Thomas Lowry, dec’d. and William Stokes; and George Craig, gdn. of Mary Tarry and Thomas Lowry 273 ½ acres for £62. Conveyed to myself and my sister Patsey Gregory, now Patsey Taylor. My share of 1137 acres. Witnessed: Martha Taylor, Thomas Taylor. Recorded 8 Feb 1810. Lunenburg, VA Deed Book 22.070A.

In 1806, the trust was formally terminated and property distributed to the beneficiaries. See Land Tax Series for Mecklenburg Co.

These records lead inescapably to a few conclusions: First, the widow Fanny Loury was the last wife of Roger Gregory, Sr.; and second, she had to have been much younger than he was, having had three sons and two daughters by him. Her maiden name has alternatively proposed as Fanny Garland (b. abt. 1730 - a near impossibility) or Mallory.
