Appearance Table (Eight Families)

The ten surnames that were searched in this test project are Bruce, Green, Gregory, Haile, Overby, Pettypool, Sizemore, Smith, Vaughan and Wilkins.

Key Dates to Remember: 1752 Halifax (including present day Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin and Patrick) was split off; 1754 Bedford (including present day Campbell) was split off; 1765 Charlotte and Mecklenburg were split off.

Warning. The lists in each county were made by a Tithables List Taker” who were appointed by the Court each year. As you may surmise, these may change often. The courts sometimes tinkered with the district boundaries. A pioneer may switch districts, yet had not moved. The lists were first written on separate sheets of paper then later assembled into books. Some districts for some years are simply missing. If the taxpayer was late in paying their tax bill, they might not appear. Some years may have two Tithables List Taker for a given year.

Abbreviation Key: The first line has the initials of each Tithables List Taker for that year. The second line is the number of tithes (white men over the age of 16) paid by the pioneer. Each tithe may include: the male Head of Household, his sons and any other male in that household whether or not they are related to the Head of Household. If a female pays a tithe, it means she has one or more sons over the age of 16, or other males in the household. In 1764 only, a third line, if present, is the number of acres owned.

If there is a 0 in the tithe, for it means someone else paid the tithe (usually a father or mother) and the payor’s name is usually listed; or, in some cases, the person is an adult “overseer” who manages the plantation for the Head of Household.

Currently, the only way to access these tithables lists are to go “old school” and either: travel to the Library of Virginia to use their microfilm scanners; or (1) order the microfilms from the Library of Virginia through Interlibrary Loan to your local library (if it has microfilm readers or preferably microfilm scanners). Either way, this is very time consuming. You have to read old cursive writing for page after page.

Have fun!

True Confession: I was quite surprised that William Vaughan was NOT present 1753-1759. He should have been. Then I noticed, he was abstracted as Baughn in 1762. What a Rookie Mistake! If any kind soul is looking into these records for present day Mecklenburg, Please

Double Check These Years for Baughn, Baughan and let me know what you find. He should be in the districts listed in the half line immediately below.
