28 Sep 1757. Robert Jones, Seth Pettypool, Sr and Robert Bruce, witnessed the will of Luke Smith. Halifax County, Virginia Will Book 0, page 43 Marian Dodson Chiarito, Will Book 0, 1752 - 1773, Halifax County, Virginia, page 4.

Note: This creates a bit of a geographic puzzle. There are two Luke Smiths in early Halifax County as will as a Luke Smith, Jr. One Luke Smith lived on Aaron’s Cr. Aaron’s Cr. runs south of the Dan R. to the North Carolina state line. It is the present day dividing line of Halifax County and Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The other Luke Smith lived on Allen’s Cr. Allen’s Cr. is a short Cr. north of the Banister R. near the western boundary of present day Pittsylvania County, Virginia about where U.S. Highway 40 crosses the Pittsylvania - Halifax County boundary. Now, here is the puzzle. Robert Bruce’s land was very close to Luke Smith of Allen’s Cr., yet he witnessed the will of Luke Smith of Aaron’s Cr. that lived on the other side of the county!
