VAUGHAN FAMILY

Ambrose Vaughan Land Distributions

AMBROSE VAUGHAN

How the family of Ambrose Vaughan was put together: Okay, this is not as solid proof as I would like, but there is some evidence of to support the conclusions herein.

The 1787 Tax Digests has three Vaughan males (Bland, Gussie [Augustin] and Richard, each with 58 acres. This is highly suggestive of a distribution of land from an estate. We known that Bland Vaughan m. Barsheba Vaughan, dau. of Ambrose Vaughan.

Looking back to the 1785 Alterations, Ambrose Vaughan transferred 58 acres to Armistead Jordan and Richard Vaughan. The 58 acres looks like 400 acres being divided into 7 equal parts. Now I am well aware that 58 times 7 is 406 acres. (When estates are divided, the land is resurveyed and often the total acreage differs a little).

So here is where we are so far as to Ambrose's children:

Barsheba m. Bland Vaughan

Augustin Vaughn

Richard Vaughan

_____ m. Armistead Jordan

A return to the 1787 Census gives us the remaining three daughters, each with 58 acres.

_____ m. Erasmus Allen

Elizabeth m. _____ Allen

_____ m. John Harvey

That completes the distributions.
