HALL FAMILIES FROM HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA

The Hall Family of Halifax County, Virginia is the main target of this research. Nathaniel Hall, John Hall and Fenton Hall are proven brothers of this line. Additionally, based on deed records and tax digests, they are closely related to Robert Hall and William Hall, who are most likely also brothers. Their father is William Hall, based on age and close relationship in deed records and tax digests.

Robert Hall sold his land in Mar 1785 and moved to Laurens County, South Carolina. He did not appear in the 1784 or 1785 Personal Tax Digest of Halifax County. His wife, based on dower releases in Virginia and South Carolina, was Mary ________. Nathaniel Hall, John Hall, William Hall, Sr. and William Hall, Jr. all sold their land in 1785. There is no further record of William Hall, Sr., and his wife does not appear in any dower releases, suggesting he may have been a widower.

Robert Hall, Nathaniel Hall, John Hall all appear in Laurens County, South Carolina. They stayed there for a short time and moved on to Pendleton (now Anderson County, South Carolina). They lived on the Rocky R. near the Abbeville County line. As will be discussed in detail below, I maintain William Hall, Jr. and his wife Mary moved with them to Laurens County, where he stayed until his death in 1799. Highly credible research of others indicates that the William Hall that died in 1799 was from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The implications of this puzzle is huge for the researchers of both families.

After the clan moved to Pendleton County, South Carolina, they were joined by brother Fenton Hall, and their sister Sarah Hall. She had first married Elias Dejarnette and after she was widowed married Israel Pickens. Also moving with them was Robert Tucker and his half brothers Bartlett (Bartley) Tucker and Harbert Tucker. Bartley and Harbert had married daughters of Sarh Hall Dejarnette.

NORTH CR. HALL FAMILIES

There are more than one William Hall in early Laurens County records. One William Hall appears on North Cr. and Little R. What appears to be a second William Hall appears on Cane Cr. just a little southwest of the first William Hall. Later a third William Hall appears to the northwest of the first William Hall. William Hall of North Cr. also had a son named William Hall. The following is an attempt to sort them out.

WILLIAM HALL of North Cr. of Little R.

Now here is where I am going to stick my neck way out. From British Mercantile Claims. Debts due Dinwiddie, Crawford & Company, Upper Mecklenburg Store, page 24. William Hall. £18.1.10 due 2 Feb 1775. He moved to Laurens County, S.C. He died in 1799 leaving more property than sufficient to pay his just debts. See The Virginia Genealogist, Volume 16, #3, July-Sept 1972, page 179. William Hall and his wife Frances Hall left Mecklenburg County, Virginia about 1785. Understandably, this is fantastic record to provide a link from Mecklenburg County to Laurens County. There is also an Ambrose Hall that leaves Mecklenburg County about the same time. An Ambrose Hall also first appears in Laurens County witnessing a deed in 1788.

This all looks very strong. Now let me present a contrary view. As an analogy, there is a big elephant in a room. You can not see much else because the elephant is so large. The British Mercantile Claims reference is the big elephant. Let’s ignore the elephant for a while and look at other clues.

Compare the following deed abstracts:

10 Dec 1785. Thomas Dendy and his wife Mary Dendy sold to Robert Hall 300 acres on Norths Cr. for 50£. Bounded by Cornelius Tindsley and William Talbert. Witnesses: Silvanus Walker, John Dendy and William Bailey. Recorded 13 Jan 1786. Laurens County, South Carolina Deed Book A, Page 104.

23 Nov 1786. Thomas Cargill and his wife Elizabeth Cargill sold to William Hall 180 acres on Little R. for 75£. Part of 200 acres granted to John Cargill, deceased, bounded by William Dendy, John Clardy and John Powell. Witnesses: William Dendy, John Clardy and John Powell. Recorded 12 Jan 1787. Description: Laurens County, South Carolina Deed Book B, Page 65.

There is only a narrow sliver of land dividing North Cr. from Little R. The name Dendy appears in both. William Dendy in the deed to William Hall is known to be from Halifax County. William Hall’s daughter Sarah Hall is known to have married James Clardy. James Clardy is known to have been the son of Michael Clardy also of Halifax County.

This is what bothers me the most. What are the chances that a group of Hall brothers would move together from Virginia for South Carolina leaving off a brother William, while a second unrelated William Hall shows up next door in South Carolina mixed in with a number of known Halifax County, Virginia families!

Now, let’s take another look at the “elephant.” How could one explain away the British Mercantile Claims abstract. One explanation could be that William Hall of Halifax County made the purchase in Mecklenburg County. The second explanation could that the investigator making the report could have simply made a mistake. A mistake would be understandable with all the William Hall’s in Laurens County, and a 25 year trail on the old debt.

In raising this possibility I am not intending to challenge anyone else’s research. I wish to (1) create a dialog; (2) encourage the people thought to descend from William Hall of Mecklenburg County to take a good hard look at the Halifax County families; and (3) encourage the people thought to descend from the Halifax County families to take a good hard look at William Hall of Mecklenburg County.

At a minimum, settling together is highly suggestive of some sort of relationship. Those of us descending from Halifax County have for years tried to figure out where William Hall came from prior to settling in Halifax County.

William Hall (Son of William Hall of North Cr.)

I have left room for William Hall, the third son of William Hall of North Cr. I have found no deed selling the 100 acres the elder William Hall purchased. Some have thought he died in 1821 leaving a widow Alsey. However, an Alexander Hall witnessed his will, which precludes Alexander from being a son of William Hall. If this is the right William Hall, who is Alexander?

Ambrose Hall

Ambrose Hall likewise settled on North Cr. He is thought to be from Mecklenburg County. He first appears in Laurens County in 1788. However, he is missing from the 1790 Census of South Carolina.

OTHER JOHN HALL FAMILIES

Here are a few more John Hall. They appeared in a short period from 1785 - 1789. This is a preliminary identification of each. More research is needed to further combine/split the deeds for each John Hall. These deeds are most likely the records of a single John Hall, who speculated on land and moved on by 1790.

Samuel Hall, Sr., of Ireland

From the research of others, Samuel Hall came to South Carolina on 19 Dec 1772 on the ship Pennsylvania Traveler with a group led by his pastor William Martin. In 1773 he received two land grants in Laurens County totaling 150 acres. Estate records are incomplete in naming all his children. From extant records and circumstantial clues, his sons appear to have been: Abraham, James, Thomas, William, Samuel, and perhaps Matthew. His wife’s name was Rosannah Hall. She and a number of his children later moved to Kentucky. His son William Hall moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee.
