Note: Person County has many years of Tax Digests. Unfortunately, there is a great disparity in legibility and organization from year to year. The organization of the records prior to microfilming has left a lot to be desired. Reviewing a few scattered years is helpful in reaching a few conclusions. Zachariah Vaughan died owning about 400 acres. His widow Drucilla paid taxes on 300 acres in 1793 and Susannah (wife of Granville?) paid taxes on 100 acres. Some lands were sold off. By 1821, Aris was paying taxes on 76 acres and Caswell was paying taxes on 277 acres. Deed records show the final division of Zachariah Vaughan’s land was in 1827. Taxes around that year has not yet been checked. Granville Vaughan never shows up in the years checked. |
