RESEARCH SUMMARY

PELEG ROGERS & ISABEL BRAND

Note: Peleg Rogers and his brother Job Rogers migrated very early into North Carolina. Tracking their movements and descendants is extremely challenging even for the most experienced genealogists for two reasons. First, is that North Carolina was creating numerous counties and changing their boundaries very often during this time period. The second reason is that the children and grandchildren of Peleg and Job had the tendency to name their first two children either Peleg or Job! The end result is massive confusion.

ca 1705. Peleg Rogers was born in Rhode Island. Note: Peleg was the son of Thomas Rogers ( - 22 Aug, 1736) and Ann Tripp ( - 1736) of Newport, Rhode Island. (Ann was the daughter of Peleg Tripp and Anne Sisson.) Thomas and Anne had two sons Peleg and Job. See John O. Austin, "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island".

31 Jan 1759. Peleg Rogers wrote his "father" in Westerly, Rhode Island. He mentioned: that he lived near his brother Job; that Job had a wife and two sons, that his wife Isabell had died April 25, 1754; and that he had five sons and three daughters of which four of his children were married. See letter dated October 7, 1985 from Bob McCrary to David H. Robertson citing Elizabeth F. McKoy, "Early New Hanover Records"; and McKoy Collection, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. Note: This letter and other documents connected with it provide an enormous amount of information and clues on the Rogers family. Although the salutation in the letter is "Honored Father", it was addressed to Thomas Brand. Therefore, the letter may actually be to the father-in-law of Peleg rather than to his father. Much of the information is connected to a lawsuit entitled Saunders Vs. Baker litigated in Newport, RI and involves a lot of references to the Brand family. If Isabell Rogers predeceased her father Thomas Brand, then the estate records of Thomas Brand, if extant, could conclusively prove the children of Peleg Rogers. The fact that Job is mentioned as having two sons identifies Job who died in Wake County, NC as the brother of Peleg. Four of the five sons of Peleg, to wit, Thomas, Job, James, and Peleg, are identified by association in the Duplin County, NC area. The fifth son is John Rogers at one time of Craven Co., SC. See 15 Nov., 1768.

Note: Of possible relation is Samuel Rogers of Duplin County, NC. or Benjamin Rogers of Bertie County, NC. Isabell Rogers had a brother Benjamin Brand (named for their uncle Benjamin Babcock). Upon the death of Benjamin Rogers in Bertie County, NC, his son Reuben settled very near Thomas Rogers in New Hanover County, NC.

See Craven County, NC Deed Book 20.238.

1779. The following residents of Duplin County, New Hanover County and Bladen County, NC signed a petitition for the formation of Sampson County:

Peleg Rogers [Peleg, Sr.]

Peleg Rogers [Peleg, Jr., son of Peleg, Sr.]

Thomas Rogers [Thomas, Sr., son of Peleg, Sr.]

Thomas Rogers [Thomas, Jr., son of Thomas, Sr.]

James Rogers [Son of Peleg, Sr.]

Jessey Rogers

Job Rogers [Son of Peleg, Sr.]

Jesse Rogers

Ruben Rogers

2 Jul 1781. Peleg Rogers [Son of Peleg Rogers]signed the marriage bond of his brother-in-law James Pittman in Henry, Co., VA. Note: Here is a very fun set of documents where two original signatures of Peleg Rogers can be compared. The original signature of Peleg in Virginia matches the signature of one of the Peleg Rogers that signed the Petition for the formation of Sampson Co., NC! The signature is quite distinctive; and does not take a handwriting expert to call it a match. From these documents it can be concluded that Peleg Rogers who died in Baldwin Co., GA in 1811 was the son of Peleg Rogers of Duplin Co., NC. The Revolutionary War had carried him to Virginia.

Comments:

(1) The Rhode Island Branch of Rogers may descend from Thomas Rogers who arrived aboard the Mayflower in 1620! The Thomas Rogers Society published a book entitled "Thomas Rogers, Pilgrim and Some of His Descendants" in 1980. This book does not accept our line as a descendant of Thomas Rogers who landed at Plymouth Rock.

(2) Peleg and Job Rogers appear in numerous NC Counties due to the rapid change of county boundaries. Some of the newer counties actually have the records of the parent county! The following is a summary of major county line changes:

Edgecombe was cut out of Bertie in 1741

Halifax was cut out of Edgecombe in 1758

Duplin was cut out of New Hanover in 1750

Sampson was cut out of Duplin in 1784

(3) Other Rogers appearing in Bertie County, NC that appear to be related to either Peleg or Job Rogers include John, Thomas, Robert, and William. Note: These other Rogers are quite likely cousins of Peleg having moved south from Westerly, RI and New London, CN.

(4) The references to Peleg and Job Rogers in Johnston County, NC at first are very puzzling as both appear to be living in adjacent Duplin County, NC before and after the deed references. This is explained by the fact that Job of Duplin County is the son of Peleg of Duplin County and Peleg of Johnston County is the son of Job of Johnston/ Wake County.
