Hall Family Connections Between Pulaski Co., Kentucky and Anderson Co., SC

The Hall family of Pulaski Co, KY has many mysteries. One of the mysteries involves some strange migration patterns. Before we look at these patterns, let’s look at some more traditional migration patterns. The Hall family of Halifax Co., VA, upon leaving VA, by and large settled in Anderson Co., SC, formerly the Pendleton Dt. This branch is well proven, but there is only speculation of where they from earlier

One off pattern migration was that of Anthony Hall who was in Newberry, SC in 1800; Pulaski Co., KY in 1810; and Anderson Co., SC by 1820. This appears to be correct as he had up to 6 sons and 1 daughter by census records and he had four surviving sons and 1 surviving daughter when he died.

A second off pattern migration involves William Hall of Pulaski Co., KY. Before we jump into him there are many inconsistencies with his records. There are two William Hall living in Pulaski Co. in the 1810 and 1820 census, yet only one William Hall paid taxes. The tax digests thru 1815 matches an 1810 deed to him. There is no deed out of him for that land. From marriage records, one William was m. to a Susannah Hall. That is very significant as you will see below. In late 1835, William Hall, of Anderson, SC sells three tracts of land in Pulaski Co., KY. The 1835 tax digest of Pulaski Co. is missing, There is no record of any Hall paying taxes on these three tracts in 1834 and previous years. Then in the 1840 Census in Anderson Co., SC, Susannah Hall is listed as a pensioner, aged 81 (b. 1759).

Continuing the discrepancies, there are three “young” William Hall in the Anderson, SC 1830 Census. There is a William Hall who pays a poll tax in 1836-1838 in Anderson, SC. This could be the same William of Pulaski Co, KY who then died before 1840 leaving a widow Susannah. Alas, there is likely never going to be any proof of this theory.
