Gabriel paid Personal Property Taxes in Henry Co., VA from 1800-1805. This would suggest he was b. by about 1779, but it could have been a few years earlier. He m. Nancy Ann Pirtle there on 16 Aug 1802. He did not appear in any deed there as a purchaser or seller. He disappears until 1820 when he appears in the Census of Floyd Co., KY. He next appears in an 1825 deed in Floyd Co., KY gifting property to his children John P. Vaughan and America Vaughan. His next appearance is in the 1829 tax digest of Estill Co., KY. He d. there in late 1840 naming only his wife Nancy Vaughan in his will. She d. there in 1855 naming sons Gabriel and Harrison in her will. Proving all of the children of Gabriel and Nancy is a challenge given the lack of records and how they worded their wills. John Pirtle Vaughan is proved by overwhelming circumstantial evidence as Nancy’s maiden name was Pirtle, Sons Gabriel and Harrison are proven by Nancy’s Will. There are eight young men coming of age in the Estill, KY tax digests that dovetail nicely with the ages of his seven sons as determined from his 1820-1840 Census Records. For now all 8 sons should remain as prospects pending further research. 1804-1810 John Pirtle Vaughan b. 1805 Confirmed 1804-1810 Samuel J. Vaughan b. <1809 1810-1815 Thomas H. Vaughan b. 1811-1812 1815-1820 James M. Vaughan b. 1816 or Martin Vaughan b. 1816 1815-1820 Middleton Vaughan b. 1817-1819 (John Pirtle Vaughan also named a son Middleton Vaughan) Confirmed 1820-1825 Gabriel Vaughan b. 1824 Confirmed 1825-1830 Harrison Vaughan b. 1827 Confirmed |
