OGLETHORPE COUNTY, GEORGIA MATHEWS FAMILY Roster The within document is an attempt to list every Mathews that appears in Oglethorpe County, Georgia records prior to 1850, with a general reference to the records wherein they appear. An attempt has been made to separate those with the same given name where possible. Needless to say there is a measure of subjectivity involved, especially if the given name is very common (i.e. James, John, William). The following table lists a few Selected Mathews males and females in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The following records are NOT included in this table: •Tax Digests after 1820 as well as Tax Digests before 1821 for Mathews other than: William Mathews (d. 1794, Oglethorpe County, Georgia), his male descendants and other Mathews living in the same district as William before 1821. Oglethorpe County has a nearly complete set of almost every year’s tax digests through 1850! Explanation •Given Name. The personal tax digests often revealed the name of the father. In the early years a taxpayer would list sons aged 16 years or older. •Deed Column. The larger font date (or date range) are dates in which a person appears in a deed (in any capacity). The smaller font is a summary of land bought or sold. •Tax. Up to three ranges of years may be in a given row. The first being years taxes were paid by the father; the second being years paid by the person directly; and the third being years paid by the estate of the person. The Personal Tax Digests are very informative as to young men who come of age and then leave the area prior to appearing in any other record. |
