Research Summary

Peter David [IV]

Introduction

This report is intended to prove the family of Peter David [IV]. All references found to date by the author pertaining to Peter David [IV] and his wives, Elizabeth White and Elizabeth Hale have been included. No Virginia research has been conducted. All references in Virginia have been provided in letters from others. Only those references to the issue of Peter David [V] that pertain to vital statistics or relationships (or in some cases migration) are included. No conflicting information has been edited, changed, or excluded. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Editor's Comments

The within summary on Peter David [IV] was originally compiled in 1981 by me, one of the co-editors of short lived Pierre David Family Association. Unverified family tradition and circumstantial evidence has not been deleted. Further proof of many matters in this summary is both necessary and desirable. The editors hope that publishing this summary will excite members into research to find more hard proof concerning Peter [IV].

The family of Peter David [IV] is a little difficult to prove since his estate did not have any distributions to his heirs. It is fascinating to note that although Peter David [IV] died in the 1830's, his estate was not probated until 1854! At that time the only estate asset was a lot of land in Baker County, Georgia he had drawn in the 1821 land lottery. The land never appears in the Madison County tax digest after Peter [IV] moved there in 1827. Most of the value of the land was consumed in litigation in Baker County to establish ownership. Unfortunately, the court records of Baker County were destroyed.

One early myth that has puzzled several researchers of Peter David [IV] is that he died in 1812 at the home of his son William David in Madison County. This is clearly erroneous information as William David died many years later.

Also some researchers feel Peter's son William David once lived in Burke County and was a county recorder there. I have not attempted to verify this. William first appears in Elbert County in 1804. He is not a lottery registrant in 1803 for the 1805 land lottery. It seems unlikely with William's father Peter and uncle Issac in Elbert County and brother Henry in Franklin County that William even settled in Burke County.

The family of Peter David [IV] must be assembled with circumstantial proof. Fortunately, there is an incredible amount of data available for this family in Virginia and in Georgia. Better yet, it all fits together neatly with minimal inconsistencies. We should be so lucky on all of our lines. Peter David [IV] had one brother Isaac David. Isaac David’s estate papers are meticulous and prove virtually all of his descendants. His brother Peter David [IV] relocated to Elbert Co., GA from Franklin Co., VA in about 1800.

In genealogy proof of relationships is often found in out of the way places. Such is the case with the 1880 Will of Isaac David, (1799-1880) (Madison County, Georgia Will Book B, page 362), son of Peter David [IV] and his second wife Elizabeth Haile. Isaac had no living descendants when he died. He gave everything in his estate to be divided among five nephews: Marshall David and Isaac David, [sons of his brother Samuel C. David]; William G. David and Jonathan David, [sons of his brother Morassett David]; and John M. Bruce, [son of his sister Mary (Polly) Bruce]. This ties together four siblings as having the same parent. The children of Isaac David (1756-1840) are well known from his 1840 will. The only person that can be the parent Isaac (1799-1800), Samuel C. Morassett and Polly is Peter David, IV, brother of Isaac David (1756-1840). This completes the mounds of circumstantial evidence that puts together a number of the descendants of Peter David, IV.

This summary assembles the mounds of available on Peter David [IV].
