RESEARCH SUMMARY

ISAAC DAVID

ISAAC DAVID was born May 30, 1756 in King William Parish, then Cumberland County, Virginia, now Powhatan County, Virginia. His parents were PETER DAVID and ELIZABETH MORISSET. As a child he moved to Buckingham County, Virginia where he grew to maturity and married MILDRED WHITE ca 1775. She was the daughter of HENRY WHITE and CELIA PAGE. Around 1780 ISAAC and his family moved to Henry County, Virginia onto land he was granted by the state of Virginia. Late in 1787, ISAAC and MILLY sold the land and moved to a tract on the South Fork of the Broad River, then in Wilkes County, Georgia, now in both Madison County, Georgia and Oglethorpe County, Georgia. MILDRED died and on February 26, 1798, ISAAC remarried SUSANNAH VAUGHN, widow of JAMES VAUGHN. ISAAC raised to maturity ten children of his own and seven children of his second wife. ISAAC was active in Millstone Baptist Church in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He died April 17, 1840 having accumulated a substantial estate.

RESEARCH DATA - ISAAC DAVID

Editor's Comment: The within summary on Peter David was compiled in 1981 by David Robertson, one of the co-editors. Unverified family tradition and circumstantial evidence has not been deleted. Further proof of many matters in this summary is both necessary and desirable. The editors hope that publishing this summary will excite members into research to find more hard proof concerning Peter III. Recently conducted research by David Robertson adds quite a bit to the early information, hence it has been added to the front of the summary.

ADDITIONS:

23 Jan

1755    MILLY WHITE was born in Virginia. She was the daughter of HENRY WHITE and CELIA PAGE. Source of information is letter to Author from Dave Boatman of Houston, Texas. Some other sources maintain her name was Lucy. See David B. Trimble, "American Origins", page 7. A letter dated January 14, 1876 from MARY WHITE PEARSON (grandaughter of HENRY WHITE) to her son JAMES WHITE PEARSON said that HENRY WHITE'S wife was CELIA BRYANT.

Thus from 1815 to 1827, ISAAC DAVID'S land stretched from Oglethorpe County, Georgia across the eastern tip of Madison County into Elbert County, Georgia.

            SEALA (CELIA?) BALDWIN

            HENRY DAVID (deceased)

            ELIZABETH VAUGHAN

            MILDRED WILEY (deceased)

            CAROLINE GLOER

            LOCKY MOON

            JACOB W. DAVID

The Will was recorded May 11, 1840, Madison County, Georgia Will Book A, page 113.

Note: Some confusion has resulted from the wording in Item 8 "..... appoint my Son Berry M. David & Alexander Vaughan Executors..." Berry M. David was the son of Henry David who d. in Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Henry’s estate proves Berry M. is his son. Berry M. David is quite certainly a grandson and not a son of Isaac David. The Annual Return distributions of Isaac David’s estate further prove the relationship. A review of the original will that was once on file in the Georgia Archives (they now say they don’t have it) showed that another name once appeared after "son" and it was erased and Berry M. added in its place. Isaac apparently had named Jacob W. David as executor and later changed his mind, realizing Jacob had left the area.

1840    ISAAC DAVID'S obituary appears in the minutes of Millstone Baptist Church of Christ, Oglethorpe County, Georgia, as follows:

"Departed this life on the 17th April 1840 our beloved Brother & Deacon ISAAC DAVID in the 83rd year of his age Mial Smith, Clerk"

The marker for Isaac David grave site at the Lystra cemetery is quite erroneous. Isaac lived in the far eastern tip of Madison County. (See David H. Robertson, Original Land Grants, Deeds and Early History of Fork District, Madison County, Georgia.) His land extended across the North and South Broad River into Oglethorpe and Elbert Counties. He served in the Revolution in Virginia and not in Georgia. Minutes of Lystra Primitive Baptist Church are available on microfilm. No member of the David family was a member of Lystra until well after Isaac’s death in 1840. Isaac David was a long standing and prominent member on Millstone Baptist Church in Oglethorpe County and his obituary appears in the church minutes there.
