RESEARCH SUMMARY

HENRY DAVID and MARY MATHEWS

INTRODUCTION

This report proves the family of HENRY DAVID. All references found to date by the author pertaining to HENRY DAVID and his wife POLLY MATHEWS have been included. Only those references to the issue of HENRY DAVID that pertain to vital statistics or relationships are included. No conflicting information has been edited, changed, or excluded. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Note: Some confusion has resulted from the wording in Item 8 " of the Will of Isaac David (d. 1840) of Madison County, Georgia ..... appoint my Son Berry M. David & Alexander Vaughan Executors..." Berry M. David was the son of Henry David who d. in Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Henry’s estate proves Berry M. is his son. Berry M. David is quite certainly a grandson and not a son of Isaac David. The Annual Return distributions of Isaac David’s estate further prove the relationship. A review of the original will that was once on file in the Georgia Archives (they now say they don’t have it) showed that another name once appeared after "son" and it was erased and Berry M. added in its place. Isaac apparently had named Jacob W. David as executor and later changed his mind, realizing Jacob had left the area.

HENRY DAVID

Due to his early death nothing is known about HENRY DAVID in the way of biographical data. A few letters from DAVE BOATMAN (Houston, TX) referred to HENRY as "Reverend" HENRY DAVID. This is somewhat unlikely as HENRY DAVID died a very young man. No further research has been completed at this time on this subject. The DAVID family was Baptist.

It was located near the mouth of Fork Creek on the South Broad River.

Comments

Several letters on file maintain ISAAC DAVID married a daughter of HENRY WHITE. Some say LUCY. Others say MILLY. Most favor MILLY.

The only early clues as to a birth date of HENRY DAVID are his absence as an 1805 land lottery registrant and the necessity of being a young adult to marry. The first record of his father in Georgia is in 1789 when ISAAC DAVID first purchased land in Wilkes County (later became Fork District of Madison). Thus HENRY was probably born in Virginia. (However, KEZIAH VAUGHN reported her father and mother both born in Georgia in the 1880 census.)

HENRY DAVID probably lived in that portion of Elbert County that later became the Fork District of Madison County with his father ISAAC DAVID. Henry never appeared in any Oglethorpe County tax digest. The Elbert County tax digests 1800-1810 are not extant. He does not appear in deed records of Elbert or Oglethorpe County, Georgia

Church records have not helped. ISAAC DAVID died a member of Millstone Baptist Church in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The church minutes a re available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives. To date, I have not researched the early minutes of Millstone Baptist Church.

The full name of KEZIAH was probably PERLINA KEZIAH. The name PERLINA is an old DAVID family name. Her youngest daughter was named PERLINA KEZIAH.

The middle name of LITTLEBERRY is probably MATHEWS. He was obviously named for his uncle BERRY MATHEWS. One grandson was named BERRY MATHEW MOORE . A nephew was named MATHEW BELL VAUGHN. Another nephew was named MATHEW VAUGHN .

Several letters by other researchers have referred to BERRY as a son of ISAAC DAVID. This obvious error is due guesswork without the benefit of data contained herein or a review of the original will of ISAAC DAVID. The recorded will refers to "my son Berry M. David". A close review of the original shows that it once said "my son Jacob W. David". "Jacob W." was erased and substituted with "Berry M.", but "son" was not changed to "grandson".

ISAAC DAVID'S home was located very close to the junction the current Madison, Elbert and Oglethorpe Counties. This is the reason for family records being in all three counties.
