VAUGHAN FAMILY DISCUSSION

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

John P. Vaughan - GM3H-MK4

John P. Vaughan was b. in Virginia in abt. 1789. He is a real puzzle. There is no record that he is related to James Vaughan who is the ancestor of most of the Vaughan in Madison Co.; yet he lived in and around the other Vaughan; and some of James Vaughan’s descendants signed a bond on behalf of his widow Greyanna Vaughan.

William Vaughan - L4T9-XZJ

William Vaughan was b. 12 May 1808 in Elbert Co., GA and died 17 July 1855 in Madison Co., GA. The dates are from handwritten notes of his granddaughter Adora Ellis Bruce. He and his wife are buried along the Broad R. near the mouth of Holly Cr. in a grave marked by stones. Logging companies have most likely destroyed the grave site. He married his mother’s niece Perlina Keziah David on 19 Dec 1827 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. She was the dau. of Henry David and Polly Matthews of Oglethorpe Co., GA.

William left a will naming his children, but there was no money to distribute. Fortunately, William’s father Alexander has extremely detailed estate records that even include cash distributions to a married great granddaughter Angeline Ford! A detailed Estate Summary for Alexander Vaughan is available on this site under Elbert County.

yDNA. William Vaughan’s great grandfather (believed to be Joshua Vaughan) and his male descendants all carry a distinctive marker DYS413a = 22. There are currently (2019) four members of the FTDNA Cyan Subgroup that carry this marker.
