MADISON COUNTY, GEORGIA DAVID FAMILY DISCUSSION |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |
Editors Note: My first name came from the David Surname. As I started exploring the David family I discovered I was descended from Isaac David twice and his brother Peter David once. While in law school (1978-1981) I was one county over from Madison County and spent a lot of time working in the original books furiously scribbling on a pad of paper. Boy have things gotten a lot easier! Figuring out this family forced me to learn a lot about genealogy and is some of the most satisfying genealogy work I have ever done. David Robertson. |
Peter David [IV] - LK3D-PZ5 Please see separate detailed Research Summary. |
William David - LV7G-5Y2 William David is believed to be the eldest son of Peter David. His wife at the time of his death was Lucy, believed to be Lucy White. He first acquired land on the S. Broad R. in 1804. His children are: Elizabeth David, Mary Patton & Sarah David (GA Madison WB A.017); William David (GA Madison IB B.071); Hadin J. David (GA Madison IB C.022); Francis M. David (GA Madison IB C.122); Jonathan S. David (GA Madison IB D.002). Census records support that he had seven sons and three daughters. Estate records prove the names of four sons. John David who m. Elizabeth T. Power fits, but is unproven. Likewise Henry Page White of Tallpoosa, AL fits as he migrated with his mother to AL. The name of the last son is a matter of speculation. |
Henry Page David - LJ5M-D3V Henry Page David (11 Jan 1780 - 18 Feb 1842, Franklin Co., GA [present day Banks Co., GA]) is believed to be the second son of Peter David. He started paying taxes on 150 acres in Franklin Co., GA in 1802. Please see Franklin Co., GA for more information. |
Peter David - LKYK-J5H Peter David [V] (23 September 1787 – 22 June 1870) was the third son of Peter David. His birth an death dates are from his gravestone, which I had the honor of finding based upon a tip from a surveyor to Mary B. Warren, noted genealogist and publisher. He m. Elizabeth Stephens (11 Jan 1784 - Aug 1859) in then Elbert Co., GA. He took out a marriage license which was never returned for recording. He appears in the first tax digest in 1813 in Madison Co. He started appearing in deeds in 1816, living on Fork Cr. in the Fork Dt. of Madison Co. His children mentioned in his will were: Children: Rachel C. Vaughan [wife of Isaac D.] , Mary W. Meadows [wife of Noah], Elizabeth C. Vaughan [wife of James W.], James M. David, Henry H.[A.] David, John M. David, Sr. His sons Lewis M. David and William W. David predeceased him. (All of his children are proven, with the exception of William W. David.) |
Morassett David - 29QN-K41 Morassett David (9 Jan 1795 - 7 Jan 1864) was the first son of Peter David by his second wife Elizabeth Hale. He m. his half brother William’s daughter Elizabeth David (29 May 1804 - 15 Aug 1878) on 2 May 1819 in Elbert Co. Morassett started paying taxes in 1817. He won some land in the 1821 Land Lottery and starts appearing in deed records in 1823. He first lived in Forl District on the S. Broad R. In 1848 he moved to land on Scull Shoal Cr. His children named in his will were: Joseph J. David, Lucinda O’Kelly, Morasset David, Jr., Jonathan David, William Griffeth David, Sarah Elizabeth David, Lucy E. David. Census records show 10 children. The identity of the their remaining children is a matter of speculation. |
Isaac David - LWFD-M9H Isaac David (1799-1880) was the second son of Peter David by his second wife Elizabeth Hale. He m. Martha Sartin 03 Jul 1823 in Elbert Co. They may have had one child, but that child was no longer living as of 1850. When Isaac d. in 1880 he named some of his nephews as beneficiaries. These nephews are: Marshall and Isaac David (sons of Samuel); Jonathan, and William J./G. David (sons of Morassett); and John M. Bruce (son of Mary David Bruce). This will is crucial in providing some proof of the children of Peter David. |
Samuel David - LJ5M-D71 Samuel David (1805 – 10 November 1888) was the third son of Peter David by his second wife Elizabeth Hale. He m. Harriott Threlkeld 25 May 1826 in Elbert Co. He only named one son Isaac David in his will. From the 1850 census we know he also had children: Marshal, [Francis] Marion, Peter, Delilah, Samuel, Mary. |

Henry David (Son of Isaac David) - LVJM-PWH Please see separate detailed Research Summary. |
Berry M. David - L3XN-D2R Berry M. David was the son of Henry David and Polly Matthews of Oglethorpe Co. Despite what the will of Isaac David appears to state, he was the grandson of Isaac David who did raise him. (See separate detailed Research Summaries for Isaac David and Henry David.) Berry m. Isaac’s stepdaughter Elizabeth Vaughan on 16 Oct 1825. They lived in the Fork District and raised the following children: Susannah David, Martha Ann David, Mary Elizabeth David, James W. V. David, Kiziah Moon. |
Isaiah David - GMLX-XGS Isaiah David was the son of Isaac David. He lived a short while in Franklin Co., GA and then moved to Wilson Co., TN where he d. in 1839. |
Seleigh David - K6WG-5DC (m. Edward Baldwin) Note: Celia David always presented a challenge. She was named in the will of her father; and William Baldwin signed for her share of Isaac’s estate. But, otherwise there was just no sign of her. A little digging in online sources coupled with a little luck finally yielded the answers. First, her name had many variant spellings, but was most often spelled Seleigh. Her husband was Edward Baldwin, who can be found in the Fork District of Elbert (present day Madison) County in one deed and in one tax digest. Then, he and Seleigh took off for Ohio! What an unexpected migration. Note: She is not to be confused with the much younger Sele David who m. David Smith on 15 May 1817 in Elbert Co.
Seleigh David (22 Mar 1781, VA - 18 May 1863 Pleasant, Grant, IN) was the daughter of Isaac David. By 1820 she was widowed living in Darke Co., OH. By 1850 her family had spread into Jay, IN and Grant, IN. |
