JONES COUNTY, GEORGIA

DUCKWORTH FAMILY

Joseph Duckworth Estate Distributions

Note: The estate of Joseph Duckworth of Jones County, Georgia is way off the radar of most researchers. He died leaving no children so he has no descendants researching him. However, his estate. in particular estate distributions of cash, provide proof of 25 nephews who each received about $300 each! This is particularly important as most of the early Duckworth Family Tree has no estate records and has been assembled without any hard proof in the way of sources.

Will of Joseph Duckworth 7 Apr 1827, 7 May 1827. Wife Ann - Real estate, certain slaves and household for life; Polly Gibson, formerly Polly Davidson - two slaves. After the death of his wife: Frederick H. Reeves - $400; John T. Pearson, son of John Pearson - $400; Patsy Hearne, formerly Patsy Stephens - $500; Polly Gibson - 1/3 of balance; the remaining balance to be divided among my nephews. Excrs: John English, Warren Jordan; and beloved wife. Witnesses: Green Miller, Polly Spinks, Susannah Spinks. Jones Co., Georgia Will Book C, Page 156.

Joseph Duckworth first gave everything to his wife Ann for life. It appears she remarried 28 Apr 1828 to John English, his executor. Although Joseph died in 1827, distributions from his estate were not started until 1839 which leads to the conclusions that she died about 1838-1839.

Joseph Duckworth then made three specific bequest to come of the top of his estate. No relationship with the recipients was stated.

Then he divided the balance among his nephews. Most of the nephews appear to be from the Duckworth side, in other words the sons of his brothers and sister. Some nephews were on both sides (both Duckworth and Carter). Each nephew received about $300 apiece. There is no explanation about odd amounts, nor missing distributions. If a nephew does not appear, it means one of three things. 1. He moved from the area and could not be found. 2. He died without any living descendants. [Note: the estate George W. Carter received distributions.] 3. We have made a mistake in the tree and the person we thought was a nephew was not in fact a nephew.

Here is what is either proved or supported by these distributions:

Polly Gibson was entitled to 1/3 of the net estate, which amounted to about $3600. The nephews were entitle to 2/3 of the net estate, which would therefore amount to about $7200. Each nephew received about $300. Based upon these calculations there should be 24 nephews. The following lists has 25 nephews, William being listed twice as his father was unknown.

Jeremiah Duckworth m. Christian Ramsey. They were in colonial Georgia by 1773 when land was platted for Jeremiah. He is thought to have died 6 Nov 1809 in Columbia Co., GA. There is no will nor any estate records for him.

Jacob Duckworth m. Elizabeth Dickson. He is thought to have been born 21 Mar 1764 in Orange Co., NC. He is thought to have died 6 Jun 1815 in Hancock Co., GA. There is no will nor any estate records for him. His widow Elizabeth appears in the 1820 and 1830 tax digest in Hancock Co.
