FRANKLIN COUNTY, GEORGIA

VAUGHAN FAMILY DISCUSSION

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

Note: Franklin County, GA was the home of many Vaughan Family members from several different unrelated branches, which makes it a little difficult to figure everybody out.

Benjamin Vaughan

Benjamin Vaughan first appears in the 1800 tax digests. He died in 1808 naming wife Martha and sons Abner and Benjamin. Other children were not named specifically named in his will.

George Vaughan

George Vaughan was the first Vaughan to arrive in Franklin Co., having land surveyed therein 1791. He d. between 1813 and 1818. His presumed son Benjamin Vaughan paid taxes on his estate in 1818.

Felix Vaughan

Felix Vaughan is the son of Abraham Vaughan of Charlotte Co., VA. He paid personal taxes there in 1787. He arrived in Franklin Co. by 1814. See Charlotte Co., VA Chancery Case 1803-020.

Hundley Vaughan

Hundley Vaughan is such a great and unique name. Many genealogists have many different opinions about his origins. None are very convincing. There is a Mundley Vaughan in Caroline Co., VA in 1772. James Miller vs. Mundley Vaughan. Attachment. Ruth and Sam Sparacio, Order Book Abstracts of Caroline County, Virginia 1772-1773, p. 53. There is a Hundley Vaughan in 1782 and 1785 in Pittsylvania Co., VA tax records and also in the 1790 Census of Union Co., SC. Due to the uniqueness of the name, these are likely the same person. Some important additional facts can be deduced from Franklin Co. records. Tax Digest proximity suggest a close relationship among: Hundley, Benjamin, Littleberry and William Vaughan. After Hundley died or left Franklin Co., there appear to be a number of younger Hundley in AL in later years, likely named for him. And then there is Melkijah Vaughan, b. in GA who later settled in Wilson County, TN. He named a son Hundley Vaughan. Melkijah Vaughan also has ties to northern AL. All this is just enough to drive us genealogists wild with theories.

Jairus Vaughan - LJ1F-PC9

Jairus Vaughan (often mis-abstracted as James) is the proven son of Craddock Vaughan of Lunenburg Co., VA. He married Hannah Pines Vaughan, the proven daughter of Reuben Vaughan of Mecklenburg Co., VA. Reuben is a known proven descendant of William Vaughan (1625-1694) of Charles City Co., VA. Craddock Vaughan of Lunenburg Co., VA appears to have come from Amelia Co., VA, but from an entirely unrelated branch of the family. Jairus is last found in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia in 1809 and is in Franklin Co. by 1821. He d. testate in Franklin Co, by 1829. He named his widow Hannah and children: Ottoway W. Vaughan, Mariah Vaughan, Harriet Mullinix, Elizabeth Ann Baker, Narseasa Jenkins and Avra Pare [Airy Pair?] in his will.

Joshua Vaughn - LKVG-QH5

Joshua Vaughn was b. in Mecklenburg Co., VA. He was the son of Peter Vaughan as Peter paid his taxes from 1791-1797. Peter was the son of William “T” Vaughan. Joshua then moved to NC where his son was b. in abt. 1799 and his second by 1800. (His son Peter declared he was b. in SC in the 1850 and 1870 Census; and GA in 1860). There are two Joshua Vaughan that appear in the NC Census in 1800. He best matches the one from Burke Co., NC. showing he and his wife both b. 1774-1784 and two sons under 10 years old. Joshua was in Georgia by 1805 as a number of his younger children were born there. He started paying taxes in Franklin Co. in 1806. Joshua m. a second time to Mary Wily on 4 Jun 1842. He died in Franklin Co. in 1854 leaving a will naming wife Mary and his nine children.

yDNA. A descendant has been tested and is in the FTDNA Vaughan Project 05 Cyan Subgroup. As of 2019 there are no definitive matching markers.
