ELBERT COUNTY, GEORGIA VAUGHAN FAMILY DISCUSSION |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |
Abner Vaughan Abner Vaughan shows up very early in Elbert Co. He is most likely the son of George Vaughan who d. abt. 1808, Franklin Co., GA naming a son Abner Vaughan. |
Alexander Vaughan - M4VP-Q6B Alexander Vaughan lived to 95 years old and amassed a substantial estate. He was b. 8 April 1785 in Mecklenburg Co., VA and died 28 May 1880 in Elbert Co., GA. He married his stepsister Elizabeth David on 20 Aug 1807 in Elbert Co., GA. She was the dau. of Isaac David who married Alexander’s mother Susannah Vaughan on 14 Oct 1798 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. Alexander has extremely detailed estate records that even include cash distributions to a married great granddaughter Angeline Ford! A detailed Estate Summary is available on this site. yDNA. Alexander Vaughan’s grandfather (believed to be Joshua Vaughan) and his male descendants all carry a distinctive marker DYS413a = 22. There are currently (2019) four members of the FTDNA Cyan Subgroup that carry this marker. |
James T. Vaughan vs. James F. Vaughan James T. Vaughan, son of William Vaughan of Madison Co. is not to be confused with James F. Vaughan, son of Charles B. Vaughan of Elbert Co. They are different people. James T. Vaughan (and any of his descendants) did not share in the 1881 & 1882 distributions from the estate of Alexander Vaughan, father of William Vaughan. This means he was deceased without issue as of 1882. James F. Vaughan, son of Charles B. Vaughan, on the other hand had living descendants at that time. |
John P. Vaughan - GM3H-MK4 John P. Vaughan is quite the enigma. He first shows up in Madison Co. living in the Fork District (the eastern tip of Madison Co.) near Isaac David and many of the children of James Vaughan. In John P. Vaughan’s estate records Alexander Vaughan and Isaac D. Vaughan were sureties for Grayanna Vaughan, widow of John P. Vaughan. This would imply a family relationship. Alexander Vaughan and Isaac D. Vaughan are both known descendants of James Vaughan who d. 1796 in Oglethorpe Co. Here is the problem. This branch of the Vaughan family is exceedingly well proved as James Vaughan, Isaac David (who m. the widow of James Vaughan and named all of her children in his will) and both of James Vaughan’s sons William Vaughan of Oglethorpe Co. and Alexander Vaughan of Elbert County all have very detailed estate records. John P Vaughan is nowhere to be found in those estate records! |
