MICHAEL HANSEN Michael Siegvart Hansen was the son of Hans Larsen and Maren Sybilla Andersdatter, of Sandar, Vestfold, Norway. He was born September 24, 1859 and died September 30, 1930 in Savannah, Georgia. He is buried in Lot 539 L of Bonadventure Cemetery. On April 8, 1890, in Savannah, Georgia, Michael married Katherine Gainey, b. March 18, 1861, d. April 17, 1947. She is buried next to her husband in Lot 539 L of Bonadventure Cemetery. She was the daughter of Michael Gainey and Margaret Barnett of Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland. Their children were:

May 13, 1899. 4. Joseph Siegvart, b. January 20, 1900, d. February 21, 1954, M. Elizabeth Paul Higginbotham. 5. John Aloyisius, b. October 20, 1902, d. July 8, 1962, m. (1), (2). 6. Arthur M., b. December 1904, d. April 22, 1914 of heart problems. Michael Siegvart Hansen embarked from Norway on August 20, 1884 on the Steamship Kingvalle and arrived in New York on September 8, 1884, arriving in Savannah on June 1, 1885. He applied for citizenship on November 3, 1888 and was naturalized on January 15, 1891. No record is found of him from his arrival in Savannah in 1885 and his marriage in 1890. In August, 1890, he was on a committee of the German Volunteers that organized the semi-annual excursion to Wilmington Island. *** Research and insert information about German Volunteers *** In 1891, 1892, 1893 and 1896 he appears in the City Directory operating a saloon and grocery store at 13 Randolph Street. In 1893 he bought a ten acre tract of land in the White Bluff District, which he later sold in 1903. From 1897 to 1910 he was a brewery wagon driver and salesman for Anheuser Busch Brewery. He moved often, living at 314 E. Bryan St., 140 Jefferson St., 132 Jefferson St., 218 E. Julian St., and 537 Huntingdon St. From 1911 to 1915 he was a beer salesman for John Sullivan Jr. Company. He moved to 216 E. State St. and to 501 E. 34th Street. In 1816 he was a salesman for J. Ray's Sons and in 1917 worked for Southern Cotton Oil Company. From 1919 to 1925 he worked for Savannah Ship Chandlery and Supply Company. On April 1, 1923 he was admitted as a member of Lutheran Church of the Ascension based on having been a member in Sweden (sic). In 1825 he purchased his home at 501 E. 34th Street (corner of 34th and Price) which he later sold just before his death in 1930. By 1926 he had his own company M.S. Hansen & Company operating at 209 E. River St. and in 1930 at 2-4 E. Broad Street. He died at 11:55 a.m. on October 1, 1930 of chronic endocarditis and hypertrophic cirrhosis of the liver. In 1884 Kate Gainey was a domestic servant for Miss E. Bancroft. In 1888 she boarded at 8 St. Julian Street. In 1890 she lived at 46 Habersham St. In 1891 she purchased Lot 13 Block J, subdivision of Farm Lot 6, 10, Third Tything, Anson Ward which she later sold in 1944. It fronted 40 feet on Tatem St. From 1940 to 1947 she lived at 123 E. 46th St., 107 49th St. and 514 41st St. She died April 17, 1947. |
