Thomas F. Rogers was born ca 1815 in New Hanover Co., NC, the son of James Rogers and Nancy (surname unknown). His father moved to Georgia somewhere around 1834 and settled in present day Brooks County, GA. Thomas was a confederate soldier, serving as a private in the Brooks County militia. Thomas was married first to Nancy Alderman Mathis on 28 Nov, 1838 in present day Brooks County, GA. She was born ca 1818 in Bulloch County, GA, the daughter of John Mathis and his second wife Susannah Edmondson. Nancy died on 18 January, 1863. Thomas was married second to Mary Scott on 21 Apr, 1863 in Brooks County, GA. She was many years younger than him. He died a short time later. On 4 Oct, 1866 his widow Mary married Thomas Maloney. There was some litigation of his estate between Mary and Thomas’ children by his first wife, which was settled early in 1866. |

20 Feb 1866. William G. Bently, administrator vs. Mary Rogers. Bill for Direction. The Court ordered (1) that the widow Mary, be allowed to keep the land Thomas F. Rogers purchased from Hardy Hunter and the house thereon, during her natural life, not a fee simple in said tract; and (2) appointed commissioners to appraise the estate for division. The portions of the estate due to men of age and the widow Mary would be turned over to them; and the share of the minor heirs would be kept together for the support and education of the children. The estate of Thomas F. Rogers was divided as follows: 1. His widow was allotted certain property from his estate in accordance with his will and as a result of settlement of litigation. 2. John J Rogers and Susannah Rogers were adults and each took an agreed portion as their share of the estate. 3. The share of minors Aaron, Phoebe, William, Wiley (Mitchell), Alan and Ansel was kept together as a group and held by their guardian. 4. The share of Rebecca, minor was held by her guardian. Note: The two eldest sons of Thomas F. Rogers had already died at the time of the division of his estate. There were no heirs other than the nine then living children. Accordingly, Richmond and Francis had no living descendants. See Brooks County Annual Return Book C, p. 467. |
