GENEALOGY NOTES

Family tradition long held (with no proof) that John Robertson was from Comrie, Scotland and his mother was Margaret Stewart. This was confirmed in St. Patrick’s Church’s baptism records of John Robertson. [At the time I looked at these records, the church did not have a copy machine, so I have not included a copy in this summary.] This was also further confirmed by the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census of Perthshire, Scotland. His father was John Robertson, born ca 1805 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland (the ancestral homelands of Clan Donnachaidh); and his mother was Margaret Stewart, born ca 1811, Perthshire Scotland. They were married 8 June, 1837 in Caputh Parish, Scotland. By 1861 they had settled in Comrie, Scotland.

The Robertson surname is the primary surname of Clan Donnachaidh (Gaelic for Children of Duncan). It is the oldest proven family lineage in Scotland! The Clan heads held the title of Baron, which is the lowest level of royalty in Scotland. Within the Clan, the heads of the Clan are known as Chieftains.

In 2014, I had my DNA tested by Family Tree DNA. A while later, I was contacted by Tim Duncan, the head of the Robertson DNA Project. I found out, much to my delight, that my DNA (as well as the DNA of all male descendants of John Robertson) are genetically close to the DNA of the present Clan Chieftain. Our line is considered part of the Chieftain’s Line. More progress in the DNA field and the testing of more Robertson’s will be needed to determine exactly where we fit in.

The only child of John Robertson to have children was John Stewart Robertson. He had six sons and one daughter. His eldest son John Stewart Robertson, Jr. settled in Savannah, Georgia and had eight sons and thirty grandchildren! The eldest son was a Marist Brother. The other seven sons stayed and raised families in Savannah, Georgia.
